I'm a volunteer at a church and totally new to web design so be gentle pls.

When I send a link to a particular page to someone, besides when I send the .com address, i have to add the .html at the end of the address. I've seen others send their personal pages to me without the html at the end. just: blahblah.com/whatever/ So what do I need to do to learn how to do this? Is this something I can do in DW or do I need to go to my control panel and do something there?

I'm sorry if I don't know the technical terms for all this... self learner here...

your first page should be called index.html then you can send the link to your friends without adding index.html. You can send something like www.domain.com and the server will look for your home page or starting page automatically by guessing you have called it index.html. Give it a try

Thx. I don't have a problem with the index page. www.thecentralthing.com (http://www.thecentralthing.com) works fine but if I wanted to send just a link to a particular page like www.thecentralthing.com/AdultMinistries.html (http://www.thecentralthing.com/AdultMinistries.html) I have to add the .html at the end or it won't open. I also have small photo business site I'd like to have particular pages with my clients' names at the end of my site name like: mybelovedfamily.com/Smith/ without the html at the end. My friend's personal site is ...org/familyname/ not html at the end. She doesn't know why 'cause she knows less about this stuff than I do. Any suggestions? Am I making sense? I really suck at this!

its the server which looks for the home pages like index.html
its a server setting which is beyond your skillset at the moment so dont bother yourself with it
all you need to know is that in any directory structure if you have an index.html page in the directory then thats whats going to load first if you dont specify a page.
You cant call the page FRED.html and expect it to load automatically. Paths, directories and file names (inc extensions) is how the computer world works

well said Dj...

New2DW... you cud, if you specifically dont want to send urls with extensions put the page you want in a seperate folder..

but this isnt practical if you want to do more than one or two pages that u send to friends..

so you cud have thecentralthing.com/s2f/ (http://www.thecentralthing.com/)

and put the page that you want as the index.html page in that folder u create. (remember now all ur image paths/css/js will be incorrect - if you had code for an image before like <img src="images/name.gif /> it will now be <img src="../images/name.gif" />
(have to go back a folder = ../)

Thx guys; I appreciate your time. I'll chat with my host support so they can point me the way. This is the only way I learn at the moment.
