Hi everyone,

Been a while since I've had a chance to visit Dreamweaver Club, I've just re-designed my website, some of you may remember my old design. So would be good to get feedback from old and new visitors alike!

www.gregfindley.com

I've gone for a more personal style to the site, as I felt the last one was too business orientated for myself. (The last one received criticism for its dark bakground, that should remind a few people)

Look forward to getting some feedback

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,
Love the new design as well as the old. Not too much whizzbang or effects, very neat. The 'web|print|identity' is a little confusing, I thought they were links, since seperating words with a pipe character like that is often used to seperate links. The same happens further down the page.

I think the site has everything you need. Short and concise, to the point, personal and I'm a big fan of thickbox js as well that you used in your portfolio.

Thanks dom,

I didn't even consider that the use of the "|" would suggest they are links! Thats a very good point, and I think I will get that changed.

And yes I've used ThickBox again :) Big fan too!

Thanks,
Greg

its clean and fresh but its safe

there is nothing wrong with safe but with design services i want a web site to grab me by the meat and two veg. A slap in the face that makes me go WoW

its like Michael Schumacher driving a MG ZS. Its not a bad car but you just expect something else and are are left feeling disapointed

LOL :D

Thanks david, that puts it into perspective! Any chance you can take another look now? I've added a bit more creativity to the latest project area,

Thanks,
Greg

those photos pinned to the board

i would preload them all on the index page. I got a bit of a delay when navigating from the menu.

i take it the background is a pic of a message board? If so, drop the photoshop representation of a pinned bit of paper and retake the photo but use a real postit note as a bg for your text

Hi David,

Thanks for those pointers :)

All pages of the site now validate W3C, switched image over to real photo of notepaper on notice board, what do you think?

I think all images are set to preload- is there a way to check?

Thanks for all the tips,
Greg

I don't see the images being pre-loaded on the homepage.. all you really need to do is take those large images like cphoto_me.jpg and list hem on the bottom of the homepage as 1x1 large images like this:
<img src="http://www.gregfindley.com/images/photo_me.jpg" width="1" height="1" alt="">

When you do that, the images are loaded on the homepage and when the user goes to the other pages the image is just grabbed from the browser cache.

Imho though, I don't think you need to preload them, I think they work just fine.

OK thanks Dom,

Do you think it will be worth doing just incase I get visitors with a slow connection? It works fine for me but I'm on quite a high speed b/band,

Thanks,
Greg

PS- Today is the first time I have got my site validated! Making some slow but staeady developments with my coding!!!

I have a slow connection but had no problems.
You have some great logos in your portfolio but your own does not stand out on the home page. From a sales point of view maybe it should have more impact

Ok thanks David, Thanks edbr,

It has been a while since I originally designed my logo, original idea was to just keep it simple, you think it could do with a re-design?

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Thanks!
Greg

Do you think it will be worth doing just incase I get visitors with a slow connection? It works fine for me but I'm on quite a high speed b/band, No, I don't think you should because you are then forcing all the main images for the whole website to be loaded on the homepage, instead of spreading the job on the appropiate pages.

And the visitor might not want to see your 'about me' page, but you've made them download the graphics for it, I have a hard time seeing the benefits here.. I would definately do it for images being used in the page (mouseovers etc), but the 'norm' (in lack of better terms) is to load page graphics when the page loads.. noone is going to have a problem with it because that's how the rest of the internet works ;)

the trouble is its 6mb Hey that should'nt be a problem, because that should be the size of his homepage after all the large images are moved to be loaded on the homepage ;)

(If one image on an inside page is enough to cause a problem, how do you think 5 of those is going to impact the homepage, c'mon!)

Thanks DJ, Thanks Dom,

So yes it is a bit delayed, but to be honest I'm more annoyed at the text on the notepaper to the right not lining up to the top correctly!!!

What browser are you using DJ?

Thanks,
Greg
