well ive been searching on the net and not got a proper definate answer:

i would like to know what the purpose of the <span> tag.... ive been looking at the CSS zen garden and that is full of <span> and wondered what it actually did....

Span is an inline container, it's designed to contain information.
It's comparable to the <div> tag which is a block container.

Those two tags are neutral in the sense that they don't convey anything about what kind of information they hold, as opposed to <h1> and

tag for example, which is designed for a headline and paragraph of text respectively.
