In Photoshop I saved an iregular shaped image which is on a transparent background using Save for Web.
But when I open it in Dreamweaver instead of having a transparent background its white.
I would like to know if there is any way around this, to bring in the image minus the background.
Thanks
wallie

did you save it as a gif and specify the transparency?

Thanks for the reply.
No I had it saved as a jpeg, have now changed to Gif and its o/k.
So is there no way to preserve transparency using jpegs?
Thanks again.

jpgs dont have any transparency settings to preserve.

other than faking (with jpg) it by making the background the same colour as the page, then no. (incidentally you'll get some colour shift with jpegs anyway so will hardly ever match the background colour of a page exactly)

The JPEG format does not support transparency. GIF and PNG-8 formats support one level of transparency, pixels can be fully transparent or fully opaque, but not partially transparent. PNG-24 format, however, supports multilevel transparency, letting you preserve up to 256 levels of transparency in an image.

"PNG-24 format, however, supports multilevel transparency, letting you preserve up to 256 levels of transparency in an image."

though not in IE without a hack :(

True that is, yes but a little hack using MS image filter solves the problem.

that is of course 32-bit png for alpha transparancy and though nice the filesize would be significantly bigger than with a gif/png-8 (with just simple transparency)
