Hi Chris,
Rounded rectangle banners are very easy in photoshop.
There is nothing much about banners you can design according to your target audience and your creativity. There are few industry standard size for banners and buttons

468 x 60 - (Full Banner)
234 x 60 - (Half Banner)
88 x 31 - (Micro Bar)
120 x 90 - (Button 1)
120 x 60 - (Button 2)
120 x 240 - (Vertical Banner)
125 x 125 - (Square Button)
728 x 90- (Leaderboard)
160 x 600 (Wide Skyscraper)
120 x 600 (Skyscraper)
300 x 600 (Half Page Ad)

The shape tool in Photoshop has a rounded corner rectangle that works well for banners.

OK so I'm thick ! I've found the rounded rectangle tool, and I've been trying everything ..... but still can't get it to work (even the help in Photoshop doesn't tell you how to use it). Any chance of a walk through before I put a brick thru my screen .

click and drag!

that's how you use it.

Just click top left of your document and drag down to the bottom right.

Pethon,

Those are pixel sizes, but like Dom said if your using it for your own site and not advertising it can be any size you want.

K.Simmonds,

As for the rounded rectangle tool, you do just click and drag but at the top when the rounded rectangle tool is selected there is a small field titled "Radius" by changing that number you can change the roundness of the corners. See samples below. Banners usually look better with a lower radius corner so it's not completely rounded but not completely square.
