Is there a way to customize icons so that when a visitor bookmarks your site a company logo (for example) appears and not the default IE symbol? If there is a way ... is this supported by all browsers so that the customized icon saves?

Please advise.
:wink:

Hi,
That icon is called "Favicon" (pronounced fav-eye-con) is short for 'Favorites Icon.' Make icon that is 16x16 pixels and save it as favicon.ico, upload it to the root directory of your domain—for example, www.yourdomain.com/favicon.ico

if you want to use a different location than root or diiferent name,add this to your webpage with the location of the .ico file.
<HEAD>
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.mydomain.com/myicon.ico">
</HEAD>

Note.. you do not need that header tag as a browser is smart enough to know what a favicon.ico is.
They can only be 16x16 also.

Yups CI,
I believe we dont need to header tags if we keep the favicon in root but in case we place the favicon in some other location and with different name then we need it. isnt it?

Yeah maybe but why would you need to place it anywhere else other than www root?
Unless you want multipul icons I guess, but cannot see the point in that hehe

When I browse to my site, and I click on file/send to/shortcut to desktop, I do not get the icon that I have created named favicon.ico, which is in the root of the site I am designing. The path to this file is: http://www.digitaldesignspro.com/rob/site/favicon.ico

I have followed all the advice starting from the first response in this thread, and I cannot seem to get to get this to work for me. Would someone pleeeease view my source code and tell me what I am doing wrong, and explain how to correct it?

Thank you so very much,
:shock:

I actually created it in FW MX 2004. Since I didn't see an option to export as an .ico, I first saved it as a .gif then changed the file extension to .ico by right clicking on the file and typing over the extension. :?:

It needs to be a proper ico file not a rename ico file. You need an icon program such as Microangilo. I hear there is a plug for PS that does this also and seems to do a good job. It has been mentioned on here before maybe do a search.
