View Full Version : Advised width for single-column text heavy pages?

I'm working on a site with a lot of text, and would like to keep it in a single column format. The text is left aligned, against an 80px wide vertical navbar.

Are there some rules of thumb as to how wide that text column should be? I'm assuming fixed-width is a good idea (the % widths I tried were not very readable at high resolutions), but I'd like to find a line length that looks good in as many resolutions as possible and is easy on the eyes/brain. How many characters per line is comfortable for lengthy reading?

The font is Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif, 11px.

And is there anything special that should be done with all the white space that high-rez surfers are going to get with this layout? Or are they used to it?
