View Full Version : Reorganize big site

I've got a tennis news site that has more than 2,000 pages in my root folder built since 2001. It takes forever for the site to show all these pages in Dreamweaver. So, I've thought about building a folder for each year and putting all the files from those years in those folders.

Obviously, I don't want manually change the links on each page. It would take forever, even by search and replacing.

Does anyone know of how I can get Dreamweaver to automatically change the links?

FYI: The site is http://www.TennisReporters.net ('http://www.TennisReporters.net').

Thanks so much for any replies!

Yes, easy.
Open the site in dreamweaver (create the site in the files panel).
In DW make the new year folders and then select and drag the files for each year into the new folders you created in DW( we are still in the files panel here) and when you place them in the folder DW will ask if you want to update.. ofcause you would say yes.
If you would like a VTM (video training module) on doing this then just ask.

Sounds simple enough but it didn't work for me.

I made a folder called "2001" while in DW's file list (the long list of local files and remote files). When I moved the file into the 2001 folder, it asked "Would you like to load cached link information now and check for links that are broken after renaming this file?" I clicked on yes.

Here's the results:

The original file
http://www.tennisreporters.net/commentary_2001_010201.html ('http://www.tennisreporters.net/commentary_2001_010201.html')
The revised file
http://www.tennisreporters.net/2001/commen...01_010201x.html ('http://www.tennisreporters.net/2001/commentary_2001_010201x.html')

I guess I need your offer of a VTM.

are you doing this on a local development server?
Is this site dynamic or static? (html or php etc)
VTM is comming up.

It didn't actually update the files
Hence from source of amended site.
That should be I am guessing tr_net_photos_art/2001/tr.net_logo_gr.gif
did you upload the new 2001 folder as well?
That is what one of the broken images tells me anyway.
so I am guessing the image files are not uploaded to the correct location either.

But still vtm coming.

My host is http://www.enterpriseenergy.com/ ('http://www.enterpriseenergy.com/') and he doesn't run php. Everything is html or cgi. It's run by a local guy.

I uploaded the "2001" folder. However, I can't move the photos to the "2001" folder. All photos must stay in the "tr_net_photos_art" folder. For instance, a photo of Andre Agassi taken in 2001 may be used in pages built in 2002 and 2003, etc.

I'm looking forward to the VTM. Will I get it via a reply to this post?

Thanks for all the help.

yes the vtm will have a link here to where I place it.
Sorry I got carried away yesterday with most wanted and now I have Razor at my mercy so once that is done the game is dead and clocked for me, so will do that today and get onto the VTM.
