You know, the small icon in the address bar preceding the name of the site? Also shows up in favorites? How do you make one and incorporate it into your site? Thanks...

Create a 16 pixel wide by 16 pixel high favicon.bmp file in a Program like MS-Paint, Adobe Photoshop, or Jasc's Paint Shop Pro, then use a program (such as the free IrFanView app [for Windows]) to reduce the colors to 16 colors [Image -> Decrease Color Depth], and then 'save as...' to a Windows Icon Format (favicon.ico). Upload the file with FTP to the root section of your web site (the first page area, where you put files like index.html). Open up index.html, and add this line after any meta tags in the HEAD section but before the </head>.

<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://yoursitedotcom.here/favicon.ico">

If you are in a user directory, without a domain, add something like this instead:

<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://yoursitedotcom.here/yourdir/favicon.ico">

Example: If you owned www.xyz.com, you would create the file favicon.ico, and FTP it to your host. Then, you'd use this code:

<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.xyz.com/favicon.ico">

Reload the page... and try adding it to your favorites or bookmarks. Once you've added it to the favorites, close the browser and then open it again, and return to the site? Does it show up now? It should! :)

No need for those tags.. as all browsers now know what a favicon is and it just needs to be in the web root directory and nothing more.

What if I'm on a Mac? How do I create the .ico file? Can I do it directly from Photoshop? Thanks!

I really don't want to pay to get it done (like from favicon.com). I'd rather learn how to do it myself... I followed the instructions above when I was at a PC and it worked great, but there must be a way to do it on a Mac. Any suggestions?

Did some research and found it, if any Macsters out there are interested...

Not sure about the Mac, try it. you can do the icon in Photoshop then follow what the others advised.

There is a plugin for ps to create icons. There was a post a few weeks ago about this. Just do a search on here and you will find it.

I am glad somebody has asked this question, as I was about to. I have done exactly what was said, and uploaded my favicon.ico to its correct folder, yet nothing appears, when I check out the site. I didnt insert any code, as it says above that code isnt necessary..........................any ideas. Please.
