I normally do all my layouts with tables, but someone suggested I try working with layers. Is one better than the other or are they used under specific circumstances? Thanks for the help...

Its a load thing. and a control thing

people are tending to steer toward layer + css layouts

developers do abuse tables and throw around <td> tags like party poppers.
I still build using tables as its an old habit but i should take the time to get this layer based layout thing learnt.
Most people will push the CSS way but if your carful then its just choice
try building a site using tables then replicating it using CSS then do your own tests

Why would people use CSS over tables? Do the pages load faster? How do you even use CSS to layout a page? Also, I've heard people critisize layers saying they are no good to use, but does anybody have any specific reasons for why not? Do they not display right in certain browsers or something? Thanks...

there can be issues across browsers when using layers and i find that layers use alot more code than a table of the same dimensions

you will have more control over positioning and style using layers and CSS than a table based page
