View Full Version : Trying to protect or lock files

I am running a website for a high school. They would like each teacher to have a web page that they could update themselves (homework and such). I have made each teacher their own folder which will house their web page and was wondering if there was a way (easier the better) for me to only give them access to their folder. I just don't want them accidentally screwing up someone elses web page. Is this possible?

What are they going to have on their webpages?

Just text? Downloadable docs? PowerPoints?

How are they accessing their files on the server?

They will have just text for now. I have created a template with an editable area that they will enter the assignments into.

They will access their file by using dreamweaver to connect to the server I guess, unless there is a better way to do it.

My problem is that I know almost next to nothing about networking and servers and the like.

kroos, we're talking about different levels of access to the servers and multiple users. Pretty advanced stuff if you have not done similar stuff before

I think you could create a usertable (DB) and grant each user access to their page (also in DB) through an admin panel secured through .htaccess or however your server does directory access. I'm not a application developer so I can't really give you more info. If you are not familiar with this you should spend some time at Macromedia's development center
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/dreamw...evelopment.html ('http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/dreamweaver/application_development.html')
or- outsource that part of the development to people like ranjan that are pretty experienced in these things.
