I would like to create xhtml code for others to use. Should I go with preformated text or a text box? Can a long string of code intemidate a person who has never used xhtml, is there a rule of thumb for size when doing this?

I would like to create xhtml code for others to use. "create xhtml'? You have to explain this..
Can a long string of code intemidate a person who has never used xhtml.. absolutely :)

Can you explain in other words what you are trying to do? I'm guessing you want someone to be able to format some text, am I in the right direction?

<div class="htmlCode">
...code here...
</div>

Then style it with:

#htmlCode {
width : 150px;
height: 75px;
overflow: auto;
}

overflow auto will ake care of scrolls if any....

you can also use background color, padding and margins to beuatify it a bit
