View Full Version : Layer linking?

Im trying to make a site using layers, but am having trouble linking from one page to another. I have one layer acting as a menu, and all I want to do is set each menu link to target another layer.

I know how to use frames, but I just cant seem to work it out. Ive searched on the net, and looked in my Dreamweaver MX 2004 book, but just cant find what Im looking for.

What your are looking for is a "hide/show" layer visiblity function.
Basically what this does is hide all layers until you mouseover/click your link.

Not reccommended for what your are trying to do as this means your entire website is on one page. Would make for a time consuming download for your users as all the layers will be downloaded at once on the initial opening of the page.

If you still want to do this, Project 7 has a behaviour you can download from their website: http://www.projectseven.com ('http://www.projectseven.com')

What about making a page for each menu item, and linking the pages that way? I guess it wouldnt look very professional when loading up. Or can this be done with tables instead of Layers?

If not, what would be the best way to do this, i.e. a more advanced version of frames?

I dont really know where to start. I know about HTML, and Im trying to get to grips with Dreamweaver MX 2004. Ive used Frontpage before too.

Should I venture into PHP?

The method used by most people is one page for each menu item.

As long as each page is not large, there will be no noticable delay between pages loading.

Here are a couple of examples where each menu item is a seperate page:
