I created a .dwt template file and everything was ok, but for some reason no
w my pages [when opened in dreamweaver] are showing a blank where the editab
le region content should be... why is this happening? Is this a setting prob
lem or something in the .dwt itself?

< !-- InstanceBeginEditable name="the content" -- >
ALL BLANK SPACE with a NO ACCESS MARK OVER IT

Make sure you put something in the editable region first.

<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="maincontent" -->put some text here<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->

If you don't you will have problems like you are talking about.

Open the dwt template in Dreamweaver
Copy & paste into new message here.
Then we can see what the actual template is like....

The code you copied here has no editable region in the body

This is missing from body area

<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="the content" --><table width="100%" border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" bordercolor="#FF0000"> etc etc etc.....<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->

It is a dangerous tool to use, however, because a decision
against the consumer may be used by the manufacturer
at any future legal proceeding, and that decision has
the same weight as if made by a judge in a court of
law-even thought the arbitrator may have no legal experience

arbitration is not a prerequisite for filing a lemon

option of electing either a replacement vehicle (typically

Contracts (Extended Warranties): </strong>Service contracts
and extended warranties are basically insurance policies.
The consumer pays an additional amount to the seller

those that are covered by the manufacturer’s express

and they do not apply to, or extend your rights under
California’s Lemon Law statutes. Also, the manufacturer

Your template is not a template as much as it is a full web page.

Your template should actually not have any content in your main content area.

You need to put your navigation structure on the left side into a "library" object.

Your template should be made up of 4 distinct areas:
1. your header area for your logo etc.
2. your left top navigation/menu area ( make this a library item "nav1")
3. your bottom left navigation/menu area (make this a library item "nav 2")
4. your main content area

1,2, & 3 should be non-editable regions
4 should be the only editable region

Once you have this layout created, save it as a template.

Your entire template should look like this:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
<title>Untitled Document</title>
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="head" --><!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
</head>
<body>
<div id="Layer1">header area (include your logo etc here) </div>
<div id="Layer2">nav1 (include your library nav here)</div>
<div id="Layer3">Nav2 (include your nav2 library item here</div>
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="EditRegion4" -->
<div id="Layer4">main content this is where all your content will go, but LEAVE IT EMPTY</div>
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
</body>
</html>

Now "open new page from template"
Your new page will have all your menus and logo plus an editable area where you can put your content.
