First, what is the purpose of the hit counter?

Most hit counters are just that, hit counters and not a count of the real visitors to your site. They don't give you any real information.

If you really want one, go to http://www.statcounter.com ('http://www.statcounter.com') and sign up for a free one.

The best thing you can do is look over your log files. Most ISP's offer raw log files and an analysis tool free on their website. Much more meaningful statistics.

Hiya Blancard,
Do you really need a 'hit counter'? ;)

The majority of these counters are used on amateur websites. Visitors to your website is hardly interested in how many times a certain page has been seen. Most hosting companies will provide you with server software that interprets your server logs. Webalizer, analogue and AWStats are some common ones (they are free).
These are normally accessed through your admin panel, and is imho a far better way of getting information about your traffic than placing an ugly counter on your pages ;)
