Product Description

When it comes to building professional websites, Dreamweaver CS4 is capable of doing more than any other web design program -- including previous versions of Dreamweaver. But the software's sophisticated features aren't simple. Dreamweaver CS4: The Missing Manual will help you master this program quickly, so you can bring stunning, interactive websites to life.

Under the expert guidance of bestselling author and teacher David McFarland, you'll learn how to build professional-looking websites quickly and painlessly. McFarland has loaded the book with over 150 pages of hands-on tutorials to help you create database-enabled PHP pages, use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for cutting-edge design, add XML-based news feeds, include dynamic effects with JavaScript and AJAX, and more. This witty and objective book offers jargon-free language and clear descriptions that will help you:

  • Learn how to control the appearance of your web pages with CSS, from the basics to advanced techniques
  • Design dynamic database-driven websites, from blogs to product catalogs, and from shopping carts to newsletter signup forms
  • Add interactivity to your website with ready-to-use JavaScript programs from Adobe's Spry Framework
  • Effortlessly control the many helper files that power your website and manage thousands of pages
  • Examine web-page components and Dreamweaver's capabilities with the book's "live examples"

Perfect for beginners who need step-by-step guidance, and for longtime Dreamweaver designers who need a handy reference to the new version, this thoroughly updated edition of our bestselling Missing Manual is your complete guide to designing, organizing, building, and deploying websites. It's the ultimate atlas for Dreamweaver CS4.

1 out of 5 stars The missing chapter   August 25, 2010

The book i purchased was missing the first 27 pages. That said I was greatly disappointed. The chapters that I did see were interesting. I can't understand why I received part of a book.
Beware of used book purchases.

This is no doubt a good book for someone who wants an in depth learning experience. However, I wanted a quick way to learn this program to get up and running. This is not the book for that. Over 1000 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Tutorials to Follow and Much Info Included.   June 21, 2010

Disclaimer:
I already knew a little bit about Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. So, I already had a small idea of the interface, however, I was not utilizing any CSS or half of the features included I realized through reading this book. I was still typing the HTML code... the hard way. Since using this book, I've been able to create better websites with more flair and with few headaches. Practice makes perfect, so don't expect the book to make you magically the best website designer in the universe after the first 3 chapters. However, if you follow the tutorials from beginning to end you'll have a much more thorough understanding of Dreamweaver CS4 and all the power it holds.
My choice came down to this book or the Dummies book. I've been a devout Dummies follower for many years, but always felt they skipped around a little too much for my liking and sometimes would expect you to already know certain aspects of any given program. This book assumes you know nothing and provides much detail when explaining how to do certain things. After using this book, CSS is easy w/ Dreamweaver CS4. It worked for me.
Very good tutorial book.

This is a great resource, but there lengthy and at times wordy. A great supplemental resource to online tutorials and/or classes.
