Slightly more than nothing February 14, 2010 Michael J. Kelly (Chicago) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is basically a tutorial, what it struggles to do is be truly relevant, if you're even moderately savvy in any one CS4 program then I recommend just youtubing user tutorials for the other apps because that is what I did while waiting for this to arrive and by the time it showed up I found maybe two interesting tidbits in the whole thing. It is well written, just does feature an indepth enough exploration of creative possibilities to really be interesting or relevant to me. I bought the design premium of CS4 and was at the time making a website with it, but this didn't really help me with any of my issues or problems. It doesn't teach you enough about anything. probably my fault for getting this rather than the dreamweaver specific one but I thought they'd cover the boring stuff quickly and get to whats interesting, I was wrong. If you are a novice and want your hand held the videos and book do that well, It is a good product, just not for me.

As a photographer, i was familiar only with Adobe Photoshop. This book has a very good writing, it helped me learn the entire CS4 Design Premium programs in an easy manner.
Comprehensive CS4 instruction January 27, 2010 G. McDowell (Orange County, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is one of the few books that takes up ALL the CS4 Premium Design products in one package. I am not a geek but the language is accessible and the information is comprehensive. One thing I have learned over the years is to not try and learn everything all at once. I spend a couple days just on Photoshop, then a couple days on Illustrator etc. Adobe has really done an excellent job of integrating their products so they mostly all function like each other. I have several books on single apps in CS2, CS3 and now CS4 but this book - which I have only just started - will prove to be a very useful reference until CS5 comes out. The book is obviously composed by a team of experts who have thorough knowledge of the product. I can detect no weak spots.
Not that good. December 26, 2009 Joanne Alwine (San Francisco, CA) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was disappointed with the book. I bought the book because it had good reviews. The CD is everything to this book it just focuses on the CD examples.
Don't waste your money and for everyone that rated it a 4 or 5 I will sell it to you for half the price plus shipping fees.
excellent overview for new users November 17, 2009 R. Pruitt 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
As a hobbiest with html and infrequent user of Photoshop and even less with Illustrator, I wanted a solid learning resource for all major programs in this suite. Too much detail boggs me down and too little isn't worthwhile. I highly recommend this text especially for new users or those with really early versions of Adobe. Many new and easy-to-use tools in CS4! The included CD offers 5-7 minute videos showing an advance peak at what you'll be learning before doing each lesson in the book. This helps with following the written text. Consequently, I've moved through the book fairly quickly. But now I feel a bit confused trying to keep the applications separate. I think it's better to focus on a few applications you know you'll use - then do them repetively so you remember the steps! Then later explore some of the other applications. I now plan to look into separate 'quick reference' quides for InDesign (a brand new appication for me) and Illustrator. With Photoshop - I really like "Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks Photoshop CS4". The pictures and easy-to-follow steps are perfect for those of us who have no intentions of being a paid professional with the program.
